DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
Established in 2003, the Department of English is a centre of academic, intellectual and cultural activities. Apart from running its four full-time programmes i.e. BS English (Four-year), MA English, M.Phil in English (Literature), and M.Phil in English (Applied Linguistics), the Department provides support to all other Departments of the university by offering interdisciplinary courses, e.g. Functional English and Expository Writing. The Department also arranges and schedules preparatory classes for special groups of IELTS, TOEFL and GRE. These classes are being taught by the trained and qualified faculty members. To keep the on-campus English teachers and those of the affiliated colleges abreast with the new trends of the discipline, the department has been arranging workshops in collaboration with national and international stakeholders, such as the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, the Culture Affairs Section of the US Embassy, Islamabad, and renowned educational consultants.
Keeping in view the recommendations of the HEC and NCRC in English and new trends and developments in the discipline of English, the Board of Studies in English has time and again revises the curricula of the ongoing programmes of study. Further updating in the designed scheme of studies will be sought to make the programmes more effective and quality oriented in the wake of future demands. The courses have been designed to help students develop a strong knowledge-base in each specific area and be able to apply their knowledge to discuss the domain-specific issues and seek solutions to various problems.
Research is the major component of our study programmes. Our students conduct research on a variety of topics from Literature and Applied Linguistics under the supervision of learned advisors. Facilities of high speed internet, HEC Digital Library and Seminar Library are open for the faculty members and the researchers.
The faculty of the Department of English comprises qualified and experienced teachers who are able to teach the approved courses. Currently there are 13 PhD Faculty Members which is the highest number of PhD Faculty in any Public and Private sector university of KP. Total number of teaching faculty is 20 comprising of 1 Professor, 02 Associate Professors, 06 Assistant Professors, 07 Lecturers and 04 Research Associates/Teaching Assistants. Office/Supporting staff consists of one Office Assistant and two Naib Qasids. The Department is an excellent English Language and Literature learning/teaching platform and is committed to meeting the needs and ambitions of a diverse range of students by providing opportunities of taught courses and research.
Besides promoting a vibrant research culture, the Department of English is committed to embracing the progressive research and reinforcing existing thought patterns. The intended focus of the Department is on achieving excellence in research of practical importance. The faculty and students are actively engaged in research activities and have published research papers in national and international journals.
BS English (04 Years) Programme
The BS English programme of study is a balanced blend of linguistics and literature, consisting of classical as well as modern genres of literature and the emerging branches of linguistics: Syntax, Pragmatics, Morphology, Semantics, Sociolinguistics etc. The programme of study also includes courses such as ELT, Language Assessment, Syllabus and Material Development, Literary Pedagogy and Practicum, and Applied Linguistics etc. Strong emphasis has also been placed on the practical aspect to enable students meet the academic needs and requirements of the higher education and find jobs in the national and international market. MA English (02 Years) Programme is phased out but students of Associate Degree may be enrolled as a bridging student with additional zero semester
MPhil in English (Applied Linguistics)
The M.Phil. programme in Applied Linguistics is an advance 2-year (FOUR Semesters)/30 Credit Hours research degree programme to prepare students, researchers, and teacher trainers who will be able to work independently and in leadership positions with the learning and teaching English as second language, the analysis of language, and the design of language-related research. This degree combines a strong research and theoretical foundation in applied linguistics with practical training in the teaching of English as a second language and L2 pedagogy. The principal goals of the programme are to provide the linguistic theory necessary for ESL teachers, to equip students with theoretical and methodological procedures used in second language research as well as practical skills of language teaching, and to prepare students for further study in English language teaching and applied linguistics.
MPhil in English (Literature)
The M.Phil (Literature in English) Programme is an advance 02-year (FOUR Semesters)/50 Credit Hours research degree programme to prepare students, researchers, and teacher trainers who will be able to work independently and in leadership positions with the learning and teaching modern trends in English literature and the design of literature-related research. This degree combines a strong research and theoretical foundation in comparative literary studies. The principal goals of the programme are to provide the theoretical and critical foundation to the students to undertake independent research in various areas of literary studies.
PhD in English
The PhD English program is designed as preparation for the teaching, publishing, and administrative service required of a career in academia. Admissions are offered literature and linguistics.

choices about how to disseminate their ideas, especially by getting their work
published in national and international journals.
5. Share their acquired knowledge on different
national and international forums and integrate themselves well with the
research community across the globe.

BS English (04 Years) Programme

MPhil in English (Literature)
The M.Phil (Literature in English) Programme is an advance 02-year (FOUR Semesters)/50 Credit Hours research degree programme to prepare students, researchers, and teacher trainers who will be able to work independently and in leadership positions with the learning and teaching modern trends in English literature and the design of literature-related research. This degree combines a strong research and theoretical foundation in comparative literary studies. The principal goals of the programme are to provide the theoretical and critical foundation to the students to undertake independent research in various areas of literary studies.
PhD in English
The PhD English program is designed as preparation for the teaching, publishing, and administrative service required of a career in academia. Admissions are offered literature and linguistics.

The graduates of English Department are serving at national and international level in multiple pedagogical, administrative, research and academic domains. We emphatically focus on student empowerment and creating sense of inquiry in the minds of our students. Our facullty is highly qualified and professional in pedagogy, counselling, research intriques and problem solving techniques to educate our learners for the solution of problems through life skills.
